How often are you playful? Playfulness is typically associated with children. But adults need to play too. As an adult, it can be easy to take yourself far too seriously. Over the past few years that is something I have struggled with myself. I realized after losing my father how little I was laughing and being silly. And since I’m very playful by nature, I have been missing an important part of who I am. Adults need to play just as much as children…maybe even more. Besides being a lot of fun, incorporating playfulness also has some great benefits as well.
I love being playful. My friends and I love to get dressed up in fancy clothes and tiaras and go to someplace like McDonalds for dinner. Of course, I love holidays like Halloween and getting to dress up in costumes. I always try to get creative and make my own. And of course, I’m pretty active in my local community theatres…and great opportunity to play a completely different person. Any opportunity I get to play just lights me up! The fact that there are benefits too is a big bonus!
Benefits of being playful
It reduces stress
Everyone seems to be so stressed out these days, and the world is a pretty stressful place to be. But being playful can help reduce that stress. It reduces stress by promoting relaxation and the release of endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. Finding a playful activity can also take your mind off the stress in your life and provide a mental break.
Studies are now showing that adults to incorporate playfulness experience a significant stress reduction. Since chronic stress has been connected to chronic illness, reducing stress can have far-reaching impacts on health
A boost in creativity
Playfulness encourages creative thinking and innovation. When adults engage in playful activities, they are more likely to approach problems with a flexible and open mindset, leading to better problem-solving skills. I know how many more creative ideas I have when I’m being playful and silly.
May improve your relationships
Playfulness can help improve relationships. Playful individuals tend to be more approachable, fun to be around and are better at bonding with others. Play can also be a form of non-verbal communication that strengthens connections.
Better learning
Did you know that being more playful can actually help you to learn? Playful adults tend to be more curious and eager to explore new ideas and experiences. This attitude can lead to a lifelong love of learning and a more adaptable mindset.
Improved physical health
Playful activities often involve physical movement, which can contribute to better physical health. Whether it’s dancing, playing a sport, or simply goofing around, physical play can help maintain fitness levels.
Increased resilience
Playfulness can build resilience against life’s challenges. Playful individuals often bounce back more easily from setbacks because they maintain a positive outlook and are better at finding humor in difficult situations.
Better mood
Engaging in playful activities triggers the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward. This can lead to improved mood and overall well-being.
Increased productivity
Short breaks for playful activities during work or tasks can boost your productivity. These play breaks provide a mental reset, help alleviate mental fatigue, and improve focus when returning to tasks.
Better communication
Communication in every relationship is important. Playfulness can improve communication skills, as it encourages active listening, empathy, and the ability to connect with others on a deeper level.
Increase longevity
Some studies suggest that maintaining a playful attitude can contribute to a longer and healthier life. It keeps the mind and body active and engaged, which can slow down the aging process.
Improved quality of life
Ultimately, being playful can enhance your overall quality of life. It adds joy, spontaneity, and a sense of adventure to everyday activities, making life more fulfilling.
It’s important to note that playfulness can take many forms, from physical activities like sports and games to more creative pursuits like art and music. The key is to find activities that resonate with you and bring out your playful side. Embracing playfulness in adulthood can contribute to a happier, healthier, and more balanced life.
Here are several ways you can be more playful

A great way to be more playful is by trying out a new hobby, or sport that you’ve have never tried before. This can include anything from learning to play a new musical instrument to picking up a new sport like tennis or pickleball. Did you know that dancing can help you to release some pent-up stress? It can! And it can make you laugh too! So throw on some of your favorite music. I have a happy playlist that I put on when I need to lift my mood. I’ll dance to that and usually feel better in 10-15 minutes!

One way to be more playful is to participate in a creative activity such as painting, drawing, or sculpting. These activities can allow you to tap into your imagination and explore your creativity in a fun and playful way.

Laughter is a great way to be more playful. Find opportunities to laugh more, such as watching a funny movie, attending a comedy show, or simply spending time with friends who have a good sense of humor. Playing with a pet or young child can also often bring lots of laughs as well!
Have a game night
Do you like game nights? There are some games that are downright fun and that create lots of laughs. So a perfect way to be playful is to host a game night with family and friends. There are always lots of laughs and fun while playing with people you like.
