Do you ever miss how magical life could be when you were a child? Maybe you long to reconnect and bring more magic into your life. Ever since I was a child, I’ve been drawn to magical things. Those who know me can tell you just how much I love the Christmas season. There is so much magic and wonder available then. But all of fall is magical to me. My birthday is in September and is always the perfect excuse to do something wacky and fun. Halloween allows me to dress up, and November means it’s time for me to decorate for Christmas (don’t judge me; it makes me happy!). I also love things like Disney World, the beach, the theatre, and the forest, just to name a few. I’ve been known to dress up for no reason and love wearing a tiara on average days.

As adults, we lose some of that magic. We think it should be reserved for children. It’s easy to get drawn into life…paying bills, doing chores, taking care of the family. And with so many responsibilities and so much chaos in the world, we can become far too serious. When this happens we can lose that sense of play, wonder, whimsy, and of course, magic!

But even as adults, we need to play. Fun, laughter, creativity, and magic are essential. And we are woefully deficient! The good news is that with a little intention, you can bring some of the magic back! Doing this can be one of the most powerful forms of self-care and self-love you can EVER do!

How to bring more magic into your life

Bringing more magic into your life can be as simple as adding little moments of wonder, joy, and enchantment to your daily routine. Here are some ideas that might resonate with you:

Create rituals

Sometimes, we get caught up in the mundane things of everyday life.  But you can add some magic by creating rituals. The good news is that they don’t have to be big and flashy! Try drinking your morning tea or coffee with a special mug. Light some candles with intention or pull a tarot/oracle card to start your day. Simple, small rituals can definitely add a little magic!

Practice storytelling

One of the best ways to activate magic in your life is to engage your imagination. Write short stories, daydream about an entirely new world in your head, or make up whimsical tales for fun.

Go on a themed adventure

Plan a “magical day” where you dress up, visit a place that feels enchanting, or do something totally spontaneous. The last time I went to see the Nutcracker during the holidays with a friend, we decided to dress up in ball gowns and wear tiaras. We went to dinner before the show and got SO much attention. It was amazing how many women loved what we had done and swore they were going to do that the next year. we felt like princesses for an evening, and it was SO magical!

Go star gazing and practice moon rituals

The night sky has a powerful, mystical energy. There’s a reason why so many witches follow the cycles of the moon after all. So go out and watch the stars, especially during a meteor shower. Also, creating a ritual to celebrate moon phases can feel deeply magical.

Use music and dance

Music is an important part of life. It is so important that it is added to television shows and movies to create an even bigger emotional impact. And you can use music to add more magic to your life, too! Create a playlist of enchanting music and then get up and dance! Have a spontaneous dance party. You could also learn a mystical-sounding instrument (like a harp or chimes).

Seasonal celebrations

Make a big deal out of the changing seasons with themed decorations, activities, or even seasonal spells if that speaks to you. I am a HUGE Christmas lover! I love the lights of the tree and always hate it when it’s time to take it down. It just makes my house seem so much darker. So several years ago, I started decorating my tree seasonally. I have Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Spring, Summer, Patriotic, and fall decorations for the tree. I also put up floral garland with fairy lights around the house. It makes my house much more whimsical and magical!

Collecting magical objects

What types of objects do you consider magical? Perhaps you’re drawn to crystals, feathers, seashells, vintage books, candles, buttons, whimsical jewelry, or fairy lights, surrounding yourself with items that spark joy adds magic to your space. I love nature, and so I collect magical things like crystals, pinecones, feathers, seashells, and leaves.

Playing with energy

This is what being a witch is all about. It’s about experimenting with energy. Every spell you cast is you working with energy. There are more types of energy work than just casting spells.  Experiment with Reiki, Sedona method, EFT, breathwork, or visualization techniques to shift energy and invite more wonder into your life.

Do random acts of kindness

There is something magical about sharing kindness with others. Sprinkle little moments of magic into the world by surprising others with small gifts, uplifting notes, or unexpected kindness. You can do these for people you know, or for complete strangers! Both work well to bring in some magic.

Travel to enchanted places

Beyond Disney and the beach, places like forests, old castles, botanical gardens, or historical towns can hold a magical feel. You don’t even need to travel to a foreign country! Discover and explore the magical places near where you live,

Add some whimsy!

Whimsy is all about playful, lighthearted magic! Here are some ways to invite more of it into your life:

Personal expression & creativity

Dress with whimsy

Wear quirky accessories, fun patterns, or colors that make you feel playful. Even something small like mismatched socks or a cute hat can add a spark of fun. I personally love to wear tiaras! Once, for my birthday, I had a princess party. I invited all the ladies to wear fancy dresses and tiaras. We had a blast! Another time when a friend and I were going to a production of the Nutcracker, we decided to wear very fancy gowns and tiaras. We got so much attention! Little girls thought we looked like princesses, and older women told us they were going to do the same thing the following year. Sometimes, when you embrace the whimsy, it is contagious!

Make-believe moments

Pretend you’re in a fairytale, a rom-com, or a fantasy adventure for the day. Narrate your life as if you’re the main character in a whimsical book. You can become a fairy or a warrior princess. It’s all up to your imagination!

Decorate with magic

String fairy lights around your home, add a secret “fairy door,” fill your space with whimsical art, or scatter little surprises (like tiny figurines in unexpected places). I always have fairy lights and salt lamps around my home. Candles can also add some magic.

Find more times to laugh

As adults, we often take life so seriously that we forget to laugh. But the magic of laughter is healing! Watch videos of babies laughing, or funny dogs or cats. Go and play make-believe with a child. Take a laughter yoga class! Laughter is truly magical! And it can transform your life!

Play & adventure

Whimsical walks

Take strolls with a “theme” (e.g., only step on certain colors, look for heart shapes in nature, or pretend you’re on a quest).

Random acts of fun

Sometimes it’s good to connect with your inner child. When you’re out in the world, skip instead of walking. Blow bubbles in a park or leave little happy notes in public places. Or you could have a spontaneous dance break or a public sing-along. I’ve done this with friends before. Once, a friend and I started singing Christmas songs while standing in line at a Walgreens. It was a long line, and you could tell that people were tired and frustrated from shopping. Within minutes, the whole line was smiling! Our fun moment of magic was contagious! Magic spreads more easily than you may realize!

Reconnect with childlike joy

Revisit childhood activities like coloring, playing dress-up, flying a kite, or building a pillow fort. Or have a game day with some childhood favorites like Go Fish, Candyland, or Chutes and Ladders.

Make a whimsical bucket list

Add things like “Have a tea party in the woods,” “Send a message in a bottle,” or “Eat dessert before dinner.”

Enchanting experiences to create magic

Storybook mornings

Start your day with a charming routine—tea in a fancy cup, reading a few lines of poetry, or playing instrumental Disney music.

Play with words

Write letters in calligraphy or create a whimsical handwriting style that’s all your own. Make up silly rhymes, or talk in an accent just for fun.

Celebrate the little things

Life isn’t just about the big events. Making magic with the little things in life is just as important! Make a toast to the first butterfly of spring, give your plants silly names, or make up a holiday just for you. You could even choose a day and celebrate your “unbirthday”. Find creative ways to celebrate the little moments. That makes life truly magical!

It is important to remember that ultimately, the magic is within you. But so often we forget to view the world with a childlike sense of awe and wonder, so it becomes hard for us to see it. Pick out a few of these things to help you focus more on magic in your life!
