Have you heard about the benefits of doing deep breathing regularly? As an empath, living in a world that is chaotic and overstimulating is stressful. So it is important to have tools that can help you when you’ve absorbed a lot of energy and when you’re feeling overwhelmed.
One of the easiest tools you can use is breathwork. Using deep breathing techniques can help move trapped, heavy energy from your body. It also helps to calm an overstimulated nervous system to help you feel less stressed.
Did you know that when people are stressed or focusing on something, they tend to hold their breath a lot? Yep, it’s true. If you are focusing on tasks throughout the day or dealing with a stressful situation, you may be holding your breath a lot without even realizing it. For a stressed-out empath, this can be bad news!
If you are already in a state of chronic stress as most empaths are, you have a nervous system that is in overdrive. But deep, relaxed breathing can help to calm down your nervous system when it’s been working way too hard!
Deep breathing is a wonderful tool that you can use to begin undoing emotional stress. Unfortunately, when we are stressed, we tend to breathe more shallowly without even being aware of how little oxygen we are taking in. But since you most likely deal with chronic stress daily, it is safe to say that you probably aren’t taking in the amount of oxygen you need to help keep yourself healthy. But deep breathing is one tool that can help!
Some of the benefits of deep breathing include:
- Increased blood oxygen levels
- Calming of the nervous system
- Reduced stress
- Increase in mental clarity
- Improves mood through the release of endorphins, the body’s “feel good” chemicals
- Stimulates the lymphatic system, which clears out toxins from the body
- Can decrease depression and anxiety
- Lowers blood pressure
- Reduces pain
- Helps with Insomnia
- Can help you to be more grounded
So as you can see, adding deep breathing to your daily routine, can not only help you to manage stress, but it can help you to experience better overall health.
The major problem that people face when it comes to breathing deeply, is that they are actually breathing incorrectly. Because of the stress and tension of everyday life, most people breathe shallowly, filling only the top portion of their lungs, not filling them fully and completely.
It is important to understand how to breathe correctly in order to experience health benefits from breathing. Breathing incorrectly can actually create more problems as it can make improper breathing even more pronounced. When you breathe properly, the breaths are very relaxed and gentle, never forced.
Here is a video that demonstrates the proper deep breathing technique
One simple exercise that I teach people that is especially effective:
1. Inhale for a count of 4 seconds
2. Hold your breath for a count of 4 seconds
3. Exhale slowly for a count of 8 seconds
This quick and easy breathing exercise can help you reduce stress quickly! This is important for empaths to do regularly, and can be done almost anywhere too! Managing energy doesn’t have to be difficult or take a long time. Tools like this can help!
